Back-buttering and transfer: reduce harmful voids beneath tiles

The aim is not to use more adhesive, but to achieve the transfer required by the system without harmful voids. Back-buttering is one possible method, not a universal rule based only on the tile being called large format.

Consumption changes with trowel, angle, texture, flatness and technique. A number of bags does not prove sufficient transfer.

It may be required for defined dimensions or exposure. A threshold in one data sheet is not a rule for every adhesive.

Installation and control

Work in areas that remain within the real open time.

    Check the substrate, tile back, product, trowel and site conditions.

    Apply a contact layer and comb uniform ridges in one direction as documented.

    Apply a thin coat to the tile back when required by the documents or the transfer check.

    Place and move the tile across the ridges until they collapse correctly.

    Lift tiles at the start and periodically; inspect transfer, edges and voids.

    If the check fails, remove fresh adhesive and correct the cause instead of automatically using a larger trowel.

Continuing repeats a defect that will later be hidden.

  • The adhesive has skinned, no longer transfers or is outside its open time.
  • Ridges remain standing or significant voids appear, particularly at edges and outdoors.
  • The tile rocks because adhesive is being used to compensate for an excessively uneven substrate.
  • Suitability for the substrate, tile, thickness or exposure has not been established.
  • Temperature, wind, sun or water are outside the product limits.

Frequently asked questions about adhesive transfer

Does every large-format tile require back-buttering?

There is no universal rule based only on the format name. The applicable standard, project or product data sheet may require it for defined dimensions, tile backs, substrates or exposure.

How do I check adhesive transfer?

Lift a freshly placed tile within the working time and check ridge collapse, transfer to the tile back and edge contact against the requirements of the documented system.

Will a larger trowel fix every transfer problem?

No. It may increase consumption and thickness without correcting skinning, poor technique, a difficult tile back or a substrate outside flatness tolerance. Find and correct the cause.
